Louisiana Montessori laws describe the role of LMA and grant legal authorization to us as follows:

1. Certify nonpublic Montessori schools in Louisiana

   • We are authorized with a Louisiana State law mandate to certify nonpublic Montessori schools in Louisiana under La. RS 17:3401-3403 (also known as Act 400 of 1976).

2. Certify nonpublic Montessori teachers in Louisiana

   • We are authorized to certify nonpublic Montessori teachers in Louisiana as Class A, B, or C for the appropriate age levels in accordance with the requirements established by La. RS 17:3403 (also known as Act 400 of 1976). Additional provisions for Montessori teacher certification and credentials are stated in the Louisiana Handbook for School Administrators, Title 28 Education, Bulletin 746, Louisiana Standards for State Certification of School Personnel, Subchapter C, concerning Ancillary Nonpublic Montessori Teacher Certificates.

3. Submit to the State Superintendent of Education a list of schools and teachers certified as Montessori schools and Class A Montessori teachers

   • We are authorized and empowered to submit to the State Superintendent of Education a list of schools and teachers certified as Montessori schools and Class A Montessori teachers for accreditation or certification by the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education as Montessori schools and Louisiana state Montessori teachers (La. RS 17:3401 also known as Act 400 of 1976).

   • Class B Montessori teachers are also submitted by LMA pursuant to the State Superintendent of Education pursuant Act 400, La. R.S. 17:3403.

4. List State-approved Montessori Teacher Training Courses and provide for processing applications for LMA and State approval of additional Montessori Teacher Training Courses.

   • Montessori Teacher Training Courses approved by the State of Louisiana for Montessori Teachers are stated in the Louisiana Handbook for School Administrators, Education Title 28, Bulletin 746, Louisiana Standards for State Certification of School Personnel, §345.

   • Procedures and standards for the approval of additional Montessori Teacher Training Courses by the LMA and the Louisiana Department of Education are stated in Louisiana Handbook for School Administrators, Title 28 Education,Bulletin 741, Chapter 35 for Montessori Schools, §3501.
